We headed to Georgetown, Penang after Singapore. Our initial plan was to stay longer than 3 days but due to their annual 50,000 + people marathon that same weekend, accomodation rates was 2-3 times more. This is where we adjust schedules last minute to another destination for the long stay.
Penang is known for their awesome food (separate post), but to our surprise, their street art in Georgetown was a delightful highlight.
Georgetown is a UNSESCO World Heritage Site and to showcase their historical facts, they used street art & humour. There are maps for tourists to find the artwork located throughout the city. We had a great time doing this treasure hunt. It’s a very walkable city and our central hotel helped with the street art hunt.
The paintings on local buildings are by Ernest Zacharvic, a young Lithuania-born artist who resided in Penang during this project a few years ago called “The Mirrors of George Town” celebrating life of inner city.
The welded iron wall caricatures are to showcase the early settlement days and the local’s daily lives. There is a message and artist name. Also placed on buildings/streets where it’s represented.
