Singapore

After Istanbul, we crossed the Indian Ocean to start the Asia tour of our journey. The planning and decisions on when and where to head next is usually decided about 1 week in advance.  Sometimes just a few days. We know our general direction ie: Europe & Asia but the finer details are booked shortly prior to departure. During our stay in Istanbul, we would look at flights to Asia as that is next major destination after finishing Europe. But whether to land in Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur or Singapore is dependant on accomodations and flight prices. And also which route makes most sense to see the cities on our list without any backtracking on flights. Keeping the schedule fluid also allows us to extend a stay or re-route to another destination if needed due to weather patterns, accomodation prices etc. So far, in the past 4 months, it has mostly worked in our favour. If housing cost is low, we stay longer. Some we had to cut short given higher travel costs.

Singapore was a short few days stopover since we have visited before. But it’s a great place to land from long haul flights given it’s a very comfortable South East Asia city to get over your jet lag. It’s clean, safe, good food and english is first language. To us, feels like Vancouver but more humid.

We like to stay right in Chinatown as it is easy access to all the good Hawkers food stalls and eateries around the area. Especially the Hainanese Chicken Rice and a new favourite toast for us, Kaya Toast.

Singapore is also called the Garden City, their streets are filled with flowers & trees. Locals also often refer Singapore as “The Fine” country given the immaculate state but also for the many different fines that law enforcement imposes.

We met Johnson during our travel to Florence. He was on an adventure through Italy for the first time. So nice of Johnson to meet up with us in his hometown and took us to a local Hawkers Market for yummy eats. Thank you for good times.

Maxwell Hawker Centre, one of many popular hawkers market. In Singapore, the food stalls have to operate with running water etc. Cannot be a free standing cart on street side for sanitary reasons. Therefore, the food is very safe for consumption given their high sanitary standards.
