We took a train from Kyoto for this day trip. Nara is located about 1 hour from Kyoto or Osaka via train.
Japan’s first permanent capital was established in the year 710 at Heijo, the city now known as Nara (奈良). This ancient capital holds several historic temples and a famous deer park that surrounds the religious sites.
The Nara park is home to hundreds of freely roaming deer. They are considered to be messengers of the gods and also a symbol of the city. They were tame and visitors can feed them with deer crackers made by the locals.
